A woman whose luggage exceeded the weight limit at the airport ended up wearing 2.5 kilograms of her clothes to avoid excess baggage charges.
Gel Rodriguez from Davao, Philippines, decided to wear as many of her clothes as possible, which saved her from paying extra baggage fees.
The passenger said when she reached the check-in counter, the airline staff informed her that her carry-on luggage exceeded the maximum weight limit of seven kilos, so she would be charged an extra fee.
“When the airline staff at the check-in counter said “Only seven kilos is allowed in hand luggage”. Me: “No problem”,” Rodriguez wrote on Facebook.
She opened her bag and wore at least three visible pairs of pants, seven shirts, and jackets, reducing her luggage weight from 9kg to 6.5kg.
“*from 9kg to 6.5kg baggage #ExcessBaggageChallengeAccepted,” she wrote alongside her photo wearing all the extra layers.
Gel’s post went viral on Facebook and racked up over 49,000 likes and thousands of comments.
“This is brilliant. Why didn’t I think of this hahaha,” one wrote under the post.
“I wish I did this, I ended up throwing some of my things in the trash bin. What a pity,” a second said.
“This woman is a genius, going to do the same the next time I exceed my baggage limit at the airport, hahahah so good,” a third added.
“Lol, I don’t care if she looks funny but this is brilliant and everybody should do the same,” a fourth commented.
Meanwhile, some people also admitted that they have done the same when faced a similar situation at the airport.
Speaking to VICE in an interview, Rodriguez said she did not want to pay the extra fees at any cost.
“I didn’t want to pay the fee for the excess baggage because it was only 2 kilograms (4.4 lbs).”
Adding that she didn’t know her post would go viral and people will love the idea so much, she said, “If I had known it would go viral, I would have posed better.”
After reading people’s comments on her post who said they would do the same, Gel recommended them to be cautioned and not do the same.
“It was really hot. I don’t recommend other people do it.”
